MOT guides

When is my MOT due?

Most cars need an MOT every year. Here is how to find your exact due date and what happens if you miss it.

How often is an MOT needed?

Most cars and vans need their first MOT three years after registration, then an MOT every 12 months. The test can be done up to a month (minus a day) before expiry while keeping the same renewal date.

How to find your MOT due date

The fastest way is to enter your registration — we show the current expiry date, the full MOT history, and a statistical estimate of how likely the car is to pass next time. You can also set the date against your records using the V5C and last MOT certificate.

What if my MOT has expired?

It is illegal to drive without a valid MOT, except to a pre-booked test or to/from a garage for repairs. Driving without one can mean a fine of up to £1,000. See driving without an MOT.

What happens if I miss my MOT?
