Used buying checklist

Vauxhall Astra reliability, common problems and used buying checks

A used Vauxhall Astra looks worse than average for reliability in UK MOT data: 22.3% of 880,234 tests failed, compared with 18.7% across all indexed models. A good example should have a clean MOT history for corrosion and structure, emissions, engine, and exhaust, and suspension and steering.

Is a used Vauxhall Astra a good buy?

It can be, if the exact car has a clean history for corrosion and structure, emissions, engine, and exhaust, and suspension and steering.

What should I check first?

Start with corrosion and structure, emissions, engine, and exhaust, and suspension and steering, then compare the car's mileage and recall record below.

Sources used: DVSA MOT tests (Apr 2026); vehicle recalls (Apr 2026); MOT fault wording (May 2025). MOT data does not capture every reliability issue, especially intermittent engine, gearbox or infotainment faults that do not appear during the test.

Worse than average in our MOT data
Green light if The car has a tidy MOT pattern, recent repairs for corrosion and structure, emissions, engine, and exhaust, and suspension and steering, matching tyres, and paperwork for service or recall work.
Renegotiate if The latest MOT mentions corrosion and structure, emissions, engine, and exhaust, and suspension and steering, consumables are due together, or the seller cannot show what was fixed after advisories.
Walk away if Dangerous defects, corrosion near structural areas, warning lights, or the same component family keep returning without clear repair evidence.
  • Repeat unresolved MOT notes for corrosion and structure, emissions, engine, and exhaust, and suspension and steering
  • corrosion and structure appearing across more than one MOT
  • Any dangerous MOT failure on the exact car, especially if the same area appears again later
  • No paperwork showing applicable recall work has been completed
  • A seller who cannot explain MOT wording such as "excessively corroded"

What should I check first?

Start with corrosion and structure, emissions, engine, and exhaust, and suspension and steering, then compare the car's mileage and recall record below.

What usually fails on the Vauxhall Astra?

Corrosion and structure is the clearest named problem area in the MOT history (30.2 MOT notes per 100 tests). These counts are issue notes, not failure rates, because a single MOT can list several faults.

What starts showing up after high mileage on the Vauxhall Astra?

Past 100k miles on the Vauxhall Astra, MOT records most often point to corrosion and structure, emissions, engine, and exhaust, and suspension and steering.

Is a Vauxhall Astra fault normal for its age?

The MOT failure rate rises from 6.6% at 0-3 years to 29.0% at 15+ years. Compare the car with the nearest age range before treating a fault as normal wear or a warning sign. The average MOT failure rate across all models in the same dataset is 18.7%.

What should I inspect first on a used Vauxhall Astra?

Start with corrosion and structure, emissions, engine, and exhaust, suspension and steering, and lights and electrical. The checklist on this page explains why each area is being recommended, what to inspect, and what to ask the seller.

Are there Vauxhall Astra safety recalls to know about?

6 relevant recall notices appear for this model. Treat them as safety checks to verify for the exact car, not as normal MOT wear.

Recall records and data freshness

Recall context: are there safety notices to know about?

6 relevant recall notices appear for this model. Treat them as safety checks to verify for the exact car, not as normal MOT wear.

2025-02-13 Vauxhall Astra Grandland Fuel pipe leakage
Affected vehicles may face potential leakage of the under-bonnet fuel pipe due to a weakness of its crimping.
Change the fuel pipe.
2017-03-17 FRONT SEAT SIDE AIRBAG MAY DEPLOY INCORRECTLY
A front seat side air bag may not deploy as intended
On affected vehicles replace the airbag module assembly
2016-12-28 FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG MAY NOT DEPLOY AS INTENDED
The passenger air bag may not meet the correct specification. In the possible event of a frontal collision front passenger airbag might not deploy as intended.
On affected vehicles replace passenger air bag module.
2016-03-04 POSSIBILITY OF VEHICLE FIRE
In the event the radiator cooling fan is blocked there is a risk that an electrical short circuit can occur. This in turn causes damage to the cooling fan module and in the worst case could potentially result in a vehicle fire.
On affected vehicles check for presence of and if necessary remove battery cover. Ensure that the radiator cooling fan is not obstructed or blocked in anyway. Fit new additional wiring harness which will prevent damage to the radiator wiring harness.
2015-02-06 SHORT CIRCUIT WITH POSSIBILITY THAT FIRE MAY OCCUR
If the radiator-cooling fan becomes blocked there is a risk that an electrical short circuit can occur. This in turn could cause damage to the cooling fan module and in the worst case potentially resulting in a vehicle fire.
Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to programme the Engine Control Module with the latest software.
2015-01-30 POSSIBILITY OF FIRE
In the event the radiator cooling fan is blocked there is a risk that an electrical short circuit can occur. This in turn causes damage to the cooling fan module and in the worst case could potentially result in a vehicle fire.
In the first instance the battery cover must be removed to prevent overheating of the wiring/module. The cover should be disposed of and must not be refitted at any time. Check the cooling fan is not obstructed or blocked in anyway In approximately in 4 to 6 months-time an adapter wiring harness will become available and Authorised Repairers will be instructed to install this harness to the cooling fan module.
